Julie Emerson

Julie Emerson from London is our guest this month and it’s a great pleasure to have you for the magazine. People in the UK know you but now it’s time for all Europe…

DJ News Mag : How did you get your foot into the UK dance scene?

Julie : I started my career as a PR- manager in the music business. It was through my early associations that I eventually became a DJ. Learning to be a PR-manager, however, gave me an opportunity to understand all aspects of the DJ’s work; contacts with professional artists led me to DJing and to my first set about 2 years ago.

DJ News Mag : Who were your early musical influences before the likes of Marco V, Sander Van Doorn and Markus Schulz had a big name?

Julie : Oh, you know, I’ve been into electronic music since the age of 12. Actually, my musical tastes have varied through the years: I’ve been into rave, acid, jungle and happy hard core. The very earliest influences include The Prodigy, who kick-started my love affair with electronic music, especially such tracks as Firestarter, Breathe, Voodoo People, and No good. When I first heard them, I was in a cold sweat! They have played something new and amazing. That was my first “WOW” .  Also, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Sven Vath, Kraftwerk and many others have played their part in shaping my musical tastes and preferences. I have always been inspired by Infected Mushrooms, too, who differ particularly in sound and the multilayering in their tracks. I like how Eric Prydz and Carl Cox sound as well. Especially some of Eric’s tracks as they sound very trancy. I could go on… :)

DJ News Mag : Were you a DJ or producer first and how did you get your first break?

Julie : I think I was a DJ first. I remember as a kid playing around with two cassettes then recording them both; I guess in this way I was trying to do my first mix; and my first party was at my parents’ home when they left me alone for a couple days. I invited many of my friends and we were partying the whole night! It was then that I realized that music was my passion.

DJ News Mag : You have your own radio show aired in some radio stations called “Get Groove”. Tell us more about this.

Julie : Yea, the show is always aired on the 4th Sunday of each month. Every month I select only the most dynamic and relevant tracks - brand new and old massive tunes as well. In March I’ll celebrate my first anniversary and I’ve already got some new ideas for the show. So, for my old listeners, and for the new ones, I’ve got some good surprises. So, don’t miss it and tune in! Or you can always subscribe to my podcast via julieemerson.podomatic.com or iTunes - and get GROOVEY with me! :P

DJ News Mag : You are a sexy and very good looking DJane. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a good looking DJane?

Julie :Oh really? Thanks! I’ll take that as a compliment.  If you’re good looking and attractive, everyone likes you, and you’re the envy of the masses - and that can only be an advantage.  I can’t complain about it, that’s for sure :D

DJ News Mag : What was the craziest experience that you had while spinning music?

Julie : The craziest experience I’ve had was when I played a psy-trance set, which is not my usual style at all. But it was a very interesting challenge and a very, very fascinating experience! It was massive and incredible playing this cosmic-style music in a forest under a deep starry sky!

DJ News Mag : What new releases can we expect from you in the future?

Julie : Well, I’ll say this, you can certainly expect a lot of surprises from me this year. I’ve got some stuff I’m working on and I’m spending a good deal of time in the studio everyday – watch this space!

DJ News Mag : What are your hobbies when you are not in studio?

Julie : There are far too many to name!  I like reading philosophical books – which is a good thing, as they are important for my studies. I like drawing; I even used to earn some money by drawing miniatures.  Sometimes I’m sporty and like playing tennis and practising yoga. All of my other hobbies include music in one way or another.

DJ News Mag : And finally, a word for the mag and for your readers?

Julie : I really appreciate your interest in my work and the fact that you have decided to interview me. I wish you continued success after such a positive start .And, of course, thanks for the compliments. To all my readers and fans I wanna say a very big thank you for all your support and all the kind words that I read on my site and pages… You always inspire me to do my very best! Catch you on the dance floor! Yours, Julie  xx
